Story & Endings — The Mermaid Truth

Who the suspects are, what the bedroom letter reveals, and how the multiple endings of The Mermaid Mask branch.

Updated: 2026-07-15 · By Mermaid Mask Wiki

The Suspects

Three crew members carry the investigation:

  • Symmetry — the cabin boy. Soft-spoken, obsessive about order; his fingerprints are all over the Children's Room.
  • Cynthia — the first mate. Competent and cold; she diverts every question about the captain's private cabin.
  • Dr. Zephr — the ship's doctor. Defensive about the Dream Chamber and its row of bottled "memories."

The Bedroom Letter

Under Cynthia's mattress sits a sealed letter. Once decoded (using the typewriter message from the Puzzles guide), it names the Mermaid directly and admits the writer helped hide someone in the Illusion Theater.

The letter does not confess to murder — it confesses to concealment. That distinction drives the endings.

The Mermaid

The "Mermaid" was never a sea creature. It was a person the crew agreed to protect, hidden inside the great cauldron so the real killer would believe the target gone. Magnus found out, opened the cauldron, and was killed by whoever was waiting inside it.

Endings

The game tracks two hidden flags — truth (did you gather all three testimonies?) and mercy (did you lower the radio to warn the surface before the finale?).
