Beginner Tips for The Mermaid Mask

Point-and-click basics, a no-combat no-timer mindset, and the habits that make the Mortuga easy to read.

How Controls Work

The Mermaid Mask is a pure point-and-click adventure:

  • Left-click an object to inspect it. Inspector text often hides a clue.
  • Click a character, then pick a dialogue option to interrogate.
  • Drag tiles, lenses, and wires when a puzzle is active.

There is no combat and no timer. You can never "lose" by being slow.

Inspect Everything (Twice)

The single most useful habit: click every object in a room, then leave and return — some items only become interactive after a later clue. The Silver Snake Sleuth achievement in the town square is your first lesson in this.

Talk to Grimmoir & Sally Often

Sally will re-state the active objective, and Grimmoir occasionally surfaces a deduction you missed. Open the dialogue wheel whenever the objective text feels vague.

Read Every Note

Letters, manifests, and the captain's log are not flavor — they are the puzzle logic. The bedroom letter, the typewriter message, and the cargo manifest are each required to advance.

Manage Your Inventory

Picked-up items (keys, lenses, tiles) live in the bottom tray. Combine items by dragging one onto another when the cursor shows a link icon; the brass key and the safe code are a classic example.

When Stuck

  1. Re-read the current objective.
  2. Re-inspect the room you are in.
  3. Check the related puzzles guide for the specific cabinet or wiring you face.

The Mortuga rewards patience far more than speed.
